Sinclair Oil Shifts to Proactive Risk Based Inspection Program with APM Integrity

Inspection

APM Integrity, part of Predix Asset Performance Management (Predix APM), equips organizations to enable a closed loop mechanical integrity program across the enterprise. This comprehensive inspection solution helps operators to reduce risk, lower inspection costs, and ensure regulatory compliance relative to their fixed assets.

Leveraging an integrated set of tools, APM Integrity enables users to calculate risk and the remaining useful life of assets to generate, implement, and execute optimized inspection strategies while streamlining auditability and compliance governance. The solution also facilitates compliance with various Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements such as process hazard analysis, mechanical integrity, and management of change.

Let’s have a look at a case of Sinclair Oil Corp.

Sinclair Oil (Sinclair) operates two refineries in Wyoming, which serve customers from the Rocky Mountains to the Great Plains. Sinclair Oil’s total crude oil refining capacity exceeds four million gallons per day, and its business is built around providing the highest quality gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, asphalt, and petrochemical feed-stock available.

Inspection procedures and practices were not standardized and varied from inspector to inspector. The refineries also relied heavily on third-party contractors to carry out much of the inspections. The primary challenge Sinclair engineers faced was one of culture change–identifying best practices and getting everyone, from executives to operating and maintenance personnel, to make the transition from reactive to proactive asset management strategy.

To address these challenges, Sinclair chose to pursue a phased implementation of Predix Asset Performance Management (Predix APM) (formerly Meridium Enterprise APM) with its smaller refinery near Casper, Wyoming first, followed six months later by its larger refinery in Sinclair, Wyoming. To speed up implementation, engineers also decided to limit the amount of customizations applied to the solution.

Using Predix APM, Sinclair was able to achieve the benefits. Overall, Sinclair identified that efficiency can be increased through merging and integrating multiple management systems, and that technology and software training is key to success.
